Critics Consensus

Though it shoots for the moon and falls somewhere in orbit, For All Mankind's impressive vision of history has the potential for real liftoff if it leans into the things that set it apart instead of settling for more of the same.

Even walking a different path, "For All Mankind" still finds ways to take one step forward and a giant leap back.

For a series about a battle of innovation, as fueled by brilliant minds and wounded egos, For All Mankind feels too slack.

Oct 30, 2019 | Full Review…

For All Mankind deftly blends fictional and historical characters... The series also does a good job of portraying outdated attitudes and environments while viewing them through a modern lens, imbuing things with abundant contemporary resonances.

If every episode of "For All Mankind" reached the level of the first 20 minutes of the series premiere, I'd be hailing it as one of the outstanding shows of the year.

The episodes are inordinately long and the storylines aren't related in any meaningful thematic way. [Full Review in Spanish]

It has no new insights on the Cold War, or the Soviets, who remain a faceless, threatening presence off-screen. And its depiction of female astronaut candidates lacks bite.

In the early episodes, one may repeatedly find their mind wandering. However, over the course of the five episodes, the show's slow assemblage of changes starts to find their advantage. Showrunner Ron Moore has been here before, and his confidence shows.

Nov 7, 2019 | Full Review…

The series is straightforward and Joel Kinnaman ("Altered Carbon") is well-cast as an astronaut, but it's pretty slow to get going.

For All Mankind makes a profound statement that has an eye toward family and how it's the ultimate importance.

Hopeful enough to be watchable, gritty enough to be engaging and fantastic enough to inspire daydreams, For All Mankind really seems to have the right stuff.

Audience Reviews for For All Mankind: Season 1

Slow start to the series but dives into the tensions of the space race and the prejudices of the era, really hooking you into the series. Well worth a watch.

The first three episodes are really bland and dry. The pilot episode of a tv series needs to hook viewers in, but it just didn't have the right pieces in place. Even it the later episodes, there are times when the plot gets quite dry. However, viewers are left with a cliffhanger on episode 3 and everything goes uphill after that. Just finished episode 8 and I'm enjoying the show now.

Frustrating at times but overall, fascinating and well worth the watch.
  • Dec 04, 2019
This is horrible. Cheap, pathetic, and what's up with the feminist agenda? I wanted to watch a show, not be told how bad men are... This is ridiculous. Could have been an amazing show, but it's total crap and I couldn't get past a few episodes.
  • Dec 04, 2019
Its a bit slow some times, and bogged down with long long passages of dialogue, it needs to pick up pace
  • Dec 03, 2019
I'm not one to always watch shows based off on space and the such but yet here we are. Familiarly unfamiliar and that's what hits me the most.
  • Nov 24, 2019
Super slow Serie. I don't want to waste my time on the second episode. They show nothing about the mission... . No details. I finished for the first episode with a huge cup of coffee, otherwise I wouldn't be able to watch it to the end.

Growing up in the 1960s, this show gives a very authentic feel. I'm loving every minute of it. I wasn't looking forward to watching it and considered passing on it. I'm glad I gave it a chance, it's my new favorite show. The balance between the private lives and NASA is nearly perfect. I want just a bit more NASA. To me, NASA is a religious organization. It anchored my childhood and chartered my dreams. We should have never stopped going to the Moon.

It's slow to take off but 100% worth the patience! The alternative history is layered right down to some of the real life people of the time, making it a great 'watch and research' series. Great acting and production

I do not understand what true scientist will have gender as 'the criterion' for missions. I thought science was the only field left that is meritocratic and which does not care about a person's background, colour, gender or sexual orientation. Sad attempt to pander to specific group.
