Critics Consensus

The daemon is in the details and while His Dark Materials visual splendor and exceptional performances deftly capture the essence of Philip Pullman's seminal novels, it could use a little more magic.

For every exceptional scene, another is either too familiar or too meh.

Dec 6, 2019 | Full Review…

Pullman's elaborate world of talking spirit animals, arcane gadgets and massive airships is beautifully realised, and half-way through the series, Lin-Manuel Miranda arrives as thrill-seeking adventurer Lee Scorseby, just to ratchet everything up a notch.

It's a series that's not perfect and it isn't the adaptation of the books that we deserve, but it's good, and that's a start.

His Dark Materials remains a world worth exploring, but whether you're comparing it to the source material or coming to it fresh, this series is weak tea.

Proof that TV is now the best medium for bringing epic literary fantasy to the screen.

[Ruth] Wilson is one of those actors who can make you shiver even as she smiles. Plus, there's no one on this earth who looks better in a belted trench coat.

It's a fantastic episode, and an important one.

This production is mysterious, highly engaging, and incredibly beautiful to watch.

Dec 6, 2019 | Rating: 3.75/5 | Full Review…

While the visuals did take you into a grand and glossy another world and the actors slid into their roles as evil aunties and absentee uncles with ease, it failed to be more than the superficial sum of its parts.

Dec 6, 2019 | Full Review…

The best and most compelling reason to stay tuned into "His Dark Materials" is the lead performance from Dafne Keen as Lyra.

Dec 6, 2019 | Rating: 3.5/4 | Full Review…

Ruth Wilson's performance here is all the magnetism the series needs.

Great series for a great book! Artists, music, picture quality - awesome. But I expected much more from battle scene, it was a real disappoint. In previos film it was one of the best scenes, here - just nothing. And why tatars speak russian and the personal of this lab - finnish?))

    Meh. Watchmen is too good.

If you crave family-fun series, this one is not going to dissapoint you.

Well, Mrs Coutler was supposed to be very attractive in the book. It was helping her to get through all kind of matters, and it was the key element. I am sorry, but the one in the show makes me scared. Her lip fillers, her numb forehead, her general loook.... she could have played someone else, but here she does not fit. And it creates a huge dissapointment. For this character it IS important, sorry. In general episodes are messy and boring. They took the plot, but they've lost that something that was interesting. I do not know, you watch episode one, you fall asleep at episode two. Coz it is not catching you. Lyra is good, she is a lot like in the book. Lord Asriel.... well, he tries to look tough, but his face is too swet and kind. You can not believe him. I know expectations were too high, but here... ugh, they just lost that spirit of the book. Show is neat, but boring. Sorry.

It was ok. Tried to be epic at points. FAILED.

The recent Daemon's in Cages episode was a series highlight but it's hard to recommend a show that honors the book so much that it damages the adaptation itself. This is a slow uninvolving show with tedious pacing and gradual insignificant plot turns relative to the outsized scope of the story. If they are taking a whole season to adapt The Golden Compass I do not think I will stick around for seasons two and three of The Subtle Knife or The Amber Spyglass.

What a boring show, unimaginative, thus far,

Brilliant through five episodes. The characters are riveting. The concepts are awesome. The world with heavier than air ships, talking polar bears with armor, and daemons is beyond expectation. The negatives reviews I don't get. Why would someone complain about "lip fillers" whatever those are. I'll revisit this after seeing the season finale.

A much better adaptation of Philip Pullman's novels than the 2007 Golden Compass movie, but it does have some issues in the early episodes. However, things start picking up from the third episode onward. A definite must-watch for anyone who has read the novels.

The series is awesome till this point, but it's only clear enough for those who are already fans! Even the opening credits is perfect and matches the story, but if you didn't read the books, you just don't get it. An absolute must see, really, but it's necessary to be open to a story that doesn't unfold at first, but when it does, it worth every second.
