The Mandalorian: Season 1 (2019) The Best TV Shows of 2019

Season 1
The Mandalorian The Best TV Shows of 2019

Critics Consensus

Action-packed and expertly-crafted -- if at times a bit too withholding -- The Mandalorian is a welcome addition to the Star Wars universe that benefits greatly from the cuteness of its cargo.

Critic Reviews for The Mandalorian Season 1

This is a visually stunning, consistently entertaining space-spaghetti-Western serial.

Favreau is as brilliant a fanboy writer as he is a fanboy director, and in Filoni, a true padawan to Star Wars creator George Lucas, he has found a great collaborator. Between them they might have simply made a great TV show.

Even dug-in purists who haven't enjoyed a single Star Wars thing since Return of the Jedi might find themselves loving this exquisitely judged new series

Nov 27, 2019 | Full Review…

This is a polished production that shows off every cent of its feature film budget on every frame of its run time. This isn't a "made-for-TV Star Wars, " it's a Star Wars that happens to be on TV, or streaming, as it were.

Interestingly, the character has his own personality and is -- perhaps ironically -- more than a clone of Boba Fett.

overall the first installment makes for a bumpy ride

Dec 1, 2019 | Rating: 3/5 | Full Review…

Few shows are this well crafted. Favreau and Filoni have tapped into something special, and I never thought I would say a Star Wars show could surpass the content of the films

A Western [as] much about societal decline as it is about survival and cool-sounding one-liners...

I love this show. If you love Star Wars, watch this.

Come on! Baby Yoda! I can't help but completely melt every time he's on screen. With that being said, this isn't a deep show BUT it is a FUN show. I love it but not as much as a deeper show (like Watchmen, which is my favorite show in years).

There is absolutely nothing happening in this show. More than halfway through the first season and there is no storyline whatsoever. It's just him and baby Yoda going to different planets and having one off adventures with no conflict. No overarching story, no character development of any kind besides a few flashbacks to the mandalorian as a child. Really disappointing show that is the pinnacle of mediocrity. Besides the jumbled, boring story the show feels like there was no editing at all. A lot of awkward shots of someone in the mandalorian suit moving awkwardly. It seems like they were going for a bad ass Clint Eastwood western feel, but there's nothing about the mandalorian that makes him cool, and his character isn't developed enough to be interesting. Only saving grace is baby Yoda, but even baby Yoda has been underwhelming.

Good, but not as good as everyone is saying. The lines aren't quite as good as Rogue One or the OT, and we only really have two characters, grim bounty hunter and cute gimmick. But it still shows a new side and new genre to Star Wars, one we all wanted, and we have lots of cool aliens and awesome armor making scenes, not to mention the fights we get. So yeah, good, but not worth the hype

It has a simple, fun, and refreshing concept. The best part about this show is that it doesn't expect you to know everything about the Star Wars lore. You can watch it and still enjoy it even if you've only seen the movies. The only real flaw this show has is that it has a pretty slow pace, which when combined with the 30-minute format and the fact that the season is expected to only get 8 episodes it leaves you with the feeling of not being satisfied enough and wanting more. But other than that, the story, the characters, the world, it's all great. Definitely must-watch television just for Baby Yoda alone.

The best thing to happen to star wars since the first movie.

Very well done. Only negative is the show needs to be an hour instead of 30 minutes.

Fresh and lovely western. Perfectly clear, simple and enjoyable.
